The Best of the Big A???

For those new to town, do yourself a huge favor and completely avoid the AJC's "Best of the Big A" results that have just been released. I don't know who is voting for these categories, but they are wrong on just about every one. Take for instance the love of the megachain restaurant. Maggiano's is NOT the Best Italian. PF Chang's is NOT the Best Chinese. Benihana is NOT the Best Japanese. To be honest, these places shouldn't have even been on the list. I would definitely argue with Ruth's Chris as the Best Steakhouse. RuSan's is a complete joke as the Best Sushi.

I know this is a Reader's Choice poll, but c'mon people. The folks that voted on any of the aforementioned restaurtants, need to get out more. Or, perhaps we can introduce a requirement that only those who know what they are talking about are allowed to vote. Hmmm. That actually may not be a bad idea for our choosing our elected officials as well...

This is because people get confused if a "name" isn't involved with the restaurant. Most poeple don't go to the places that are actually good because they are too busy eating at TGI Friday's or Applebee's.

It's sad really. I saw the list and it made me just want to cry. it was terrible.

I think people should avoid the Megachain places, and try the following places instead:
- Sotto Sotto
- Baraonda
- Imari
- Taka
- Canton Cooks
- Rathbun's
- Two Urban Licks
- Agave
- Food Studio
- Tamarind

Well, the problem is that the aforementioned places have the most brand-presence in the "average Atlantan's" mind. They may not even LIKE the place particularly, but Benihana may be the only place they can think of regarding Japanese cuisine. And they feel pretty special getting dressed up to go to Maggiano's on a Saturday night (or even a Carrabba's).

Take into consideration that this is covering all of Metro Atlanta, and since those Megachain places expand into suburbia, a busy family with 2 kids is more likely to drive 10 minutes towards North Point Mall for PF Changs, Bahama Breeze or the like, than 30 minutes down to Buckhead to enjoy a nice Italian meal at Ciao Bella (my fave Italian in the city).

These places have more exposure than the lesser-known places Intown. But honestly? I like it that way -- it makes it easier for me to get a table at my favorite places than if they were broadcast everywhere. Yes, I'm selfish, but I don't care.

I don't pay attention to polls.
Sounds like, from the results of this poll, that respondants were being offered a prize of some kind.
